Kels Goodman
Maverick filmmaker from Texas

Kels Goodman, the director of the upcoming historical epic "Handcart", may be best known to movie audiences for his $30,000 independent film "Yankee 2 Kilo," a romantic comedy about Y2K paranoia. This low budget film has been screened for audiences in Orem at the SCERA theater, and is available on video. It was written, directed and produced by Goodman.

The cinematic seeds for "Handcart" were sewn while Goodman was working as the camera operator for producer Kevin Mitchell, shooting footage for a 13-episode television documentary called "Legacy West", about the 1997 reenactment of the pioneer trek. Goodman directed dramatic vignettes of the wagon trains and handcarts, based on actual accounts from pioneer journals.

With his experience as both a director and a cameraman, along with a historical backdrop dear to many, Goodman has generated considerable anticipation for his newest film project about the Martin handcart company.

Rocco DeVilliers
Hot guerrilla filmmaker

Source: Artsmarts News, 28 Dec 99:

Before Tarantino... 21-year-old filmmaker Rocco DeVilliers set out to create a film of epic proportions on only a $15,000 shoestring budget. It took Rocco four years to create the film Pure Race. Unfortunately, he couldn't get anyone in Hollywood to look at it. Now, years later, Pure Race is premiering on national television January 3rd on BET (Black Entertainment Television).

The film is an action-drama about two students, one white and one black, who share a ride home from college. When their car unexpectedly breaks down in Idaho, they stumble onto a white supremacist group and must overcome their own prejudices to survive. The film is a grand adventure from its powerful dramatic themes to its many stunning action sequences.

Rocco was forced to be virtually a one-man crew, use his friends as actors, orchestrate elaborate action sequences, and actually perform most of the film's dangerous stunts himself.

LDSfilm.com: I've seen the film Pure Race. Rocco's film really is "epic" in scope. He had no crew, no experience, and essentially no budget. What was he thinking? This film should be horrible, but it's not. It's the sweetest action movie about neo-Nazis you've ever seen. Yes, there are flaws. But there's nothing at all that most families will find objectionable (not even profanity or vulgarity), and there's a ton of things to enjoy. Great humor and action. Lead actor Gregory C. Haynes is fantastic. The film's bad guy, Marvin Payne, is cast in a very different role than his famed turn as the Dad in Saturday's Warrior. Payne is thoroughly compelling and multilayered as the neo-Nazi leader. The production quality and array of locations are amazing when one considers the film's modest budget. Pure Race might be a little "cheesy" in spots, but it made me smile.

Wetzel O. Whitaker
"unsung genius of LDS educational filmmaking"

Source: 17th Olympia Film Fest.:

A Tribute to Wetzel O. Whitaker... Presented by Jack Stevenson

The French say that American filmmakers have never really embraced the auteur theory - but obviously they have never seen the films of Wetzel O. Whitaker! So allow us to share with you the magic of this unsung genius of Mormon educational filmmaking! Outrageous camp meets brutal realism in these three short films that confront the moral issues facing teens in a world teeming with hideous fashion, bad haircuts and campus conflict. The college drama How Do I Love Thee? (1970), the faith-restoring For Time Or Eternity (1970) and the truly eerie Cipher In The Snow (1973) are presented here by festival guest Jack Stevenson, an expert in the field of moralist melodrama.

Two of Whitaker's films are available on video as part of the "BYU Classics" series, "Johnny Lingo" and "Cipher in the Snow."

Notes
* Names with asterisk: Published biographical sketch doesn't mention religious affilation, but person is from and/or lives in an area of Utah (or Cardston, Rexburg, etc.) in which at least 70% of the population are Latter-day Saints. Aside from those asterisk-marked filmmakers (who may or may not be LDS), all of the filmmakers named on this page are Latter-day Saints. With a few exceptions, all are active/practicing church members (or were while they were alive).

1 Superscript 1: Latter-day Saints that are not currently active churchgoers, or inviduals (e.g. Hanks) who were previously churchgoing Latter-day Saints but no longer are. With deceased individuals (e.g. Hal Ashby), refers to individuals who were Latter-day Saints, but were not active Churchgoers during the bulk of their career and when they died.

Note: Many films made by Latter-day Saint filmmakers are not intended primarily for LDS audiences, even if they incorporate Latter-day Saint Christian values. LaBute's "In the Company of Men" is a good example. This critically acclaimed film has been embraced by a segment of the population unlikely to see, for example, Kieth Merrill's "Testaments." Both films are radically Christian and Gospel-centered in viewpoint, but they speak to different audiences.

This page is NOT any sort of "suggested viewing list." There are some great films listed here. But many of these films simply represent the work of working actors or filmmakers. And there are over 3,000 films listed on these pages; it would be senseless to try to see them all.

Films by Latter-day Saints web page created 22 August 2000. Directors/producers (Mormon film directors; LDS film directors) page split from home page 6 August 2002. Last modified 19 October 2005.
