Callie Carpenter (Vinessa Shaw) goes from angry teen to confident young woman when she's sent from New York City to Utah's red-hilled Coyote Arrow Ranch for a Coyote Summer.
Arriving at her Aunt and Uncle's ranch, Callie is belligerent and unfriendly but grudgingly learns the chores of ranch life from a young horse trainer, Rafe (Adam Beach).
She falls in love with a beautiful black stallion, Kiah, only to learn that he is considered untrainable and is to be put down.
Callie feels a certain kindred spirit with the horse and is determined to save him.
She turns to Rafe for help and together they rescue Kiah and train him for competition. When Callie rides the stallion to victory she saves his life and brings new direction to her own.
